Description
A Mid-Century Icon: 1960s Martell Cordon Bleu Cognac
Step back in time with this exceptional bottle of Martell Cordon Bleu, a genuine artifact from the 1960s. This is not merely a cognac; it is a piece of history from the oldest of the great cognac houses, Maison Martell, founded in 1715. The Cordon Bleu cuvée itself, an icon of taste and elegance, was created in 1912 by Edouard Martell to be a new, superior quality of cognac, a status it has maintained for over a century.
This particular bottle was produced for the discerning American market, as evidenced by its 4/5 Quart size and 80 Proof designation. It represents a specific era of international luxury, imported to the United States by The Jos. Garneau Co. of New York, N.Y. The blend is a testament to the Martell house style, famously characterized by a significant proportion of eaux-de-vie from the smallest and most sought-after cru, the Borderies, renowned for conferring elegant, floral aromas.
As a vintage expression, this Cordon Bleu offers a glimpse into the aromatic profile of a mid-20th-century blend, crafted with the exceptional savoir-faire passed down through generations of Martell cellar masters. Its superb preservation, including a high fill level, makes it a rare and highly collectible artifact, embodying the heritage and timeless prestige of the Martell name.
Product Information
The presentation of this bottle is a masterclass in vintage branding. The main front label is off-white, framed by a delicate blue double-line border. The name MARTELL is featured in a bold serif font, with the cursive "J. & F. Martell" signature below it. The designation CORDON BLEU is prominently displayed in shadowed, blue block letters. The label also declares this as a "FINE LIQUEUR COGNAC BRANDY" and notes it is a "PRODUCE OF FRANCE," produced and bottled in Cognac. At the bottom, the sole U.S. distributors, "THE JOS. GARNEAU Co. NEW YORK, N. Y.," are credited. The back label, bordered in a dotted gold-colored line, affirms the contents as the natural product of the Cognac district, accompanied by the "Acquit Regional Jaune D'or" issued by the French Government.
Visual elements of this heritage bottle are remarkably well-preserved. A lustrous silver capsule covers the neck and closure, embossed in dark blue with "J. & F. MARTELL COGNAC" and the house crest—a swift bird over three hammers. A vertical blue strip label with repeating white "J&F MARTELL" text runs down the neck. Affixed to the bottle's shoulder is a dark, wax-like seal bearing the intricate Martell family emblem. A partially legible red state tax band is still present over the capsule, adding to its authentic vintage character. The bottle's excellent condition is highlighted by a very high fill level, well into the neck.
The original box accompanies the bottle, featuring a light blue-grey background. "MARTELL" is printed within an oval at the top, above "Cognac" in an elegant script. The center is dominated by a striking blue chevron pattern with gold trim, emblazoned with "CORDON BLEU." Below this, the Martell swift and crest are rendered in gold, completing a package of true vintage luxury.
