Description

A truly remarkable expression of cognac history, this bottle of Rémy Martin Louis XIII represents a highly sought-after bottling from the 1970s, specifically produced for the American market. It is an exceptional collector's item, capturing the pinnacle of craftsmanship from a bygone era. The spirit itself is a testament to the revered heritage of the House of Rémy Martin, composed exclusively of eaux-de-vie from the prestigious Grande Champagne region, the premier cru of Cognac.

The legendary Louis XIII blend is renowned for its complexity, containing up to 1,200 individual eaux-de-vie aged between 40 and 100 years in ancient Limousin oak casks. This specific edition is a magnificent example of that lineage, offering a glimpse into the aromatic profile favored by a previous generation of cellar masters. The dating of this bottle to the 1970s is firmly established by several key features: the imperial 4/5 Quart volume and 80 Proof declarations, which were standard in the U.S. before the transition to metric units, and the white foil capsule, a characteristic of bottlings before 1981.

Presented in its iconic decanter, inspired by a 16th-century flask discovered on the battlefield of Jarnac, this bottle is a work of art. Its collectability is further enhanced by its provenance as an import by Renfield Importers Ltd. of Union, New Jersey, making it a distinct and tangible piece of cognac's journey into the United States. This combination of historical details makes it a prized possession for any serious connoisseur of fine spirits.

Product Information

The labels on this vintage decanter are a key part of its story. The front features a classic, off-white oval paper label with the proud declaration "GRANDE CHAMPAGNE LOUIS XIII BRAND" in a bold serif font. Below this, the terms "Réserve," "4/5 Quart," and "80 Proof" are clearly noted, alongside "E. Rémy Martin & C° Cognac." A delicate neck label displays "Rémy Martin Cognac" in an elegant script. The back label provides further provenance, stating it was "DISTILLED AND BOTTLED BY E. REMY MARTIN & C° - Cognac" and identifying the importer as "RENFIELD IMPORTERS LTD., UNION N.J."

Visually, the bottle is a masterpiece of glasswork. The clear, flattened decanter is adorned with distinctive raised fleur-de-lis spikes around its circumference and on its four feet. Two glass medallions with embossed fleur-de-lis designs are positioned above and below a central metallic medallion which bears the iconic Rémy Martin centaur emblem. A gold mesh ribbon is tied neatly around the neck, just below a white crinkled foil capsule which is sealed with a pink band. The top of the capsule is stamped with the centaur logo, encircled by the words "REMY MARTIN" and "COGNAC." This bottle was originally presented in a classic octagonal red velvet box, completing its luxurious presentation.

This bottle is in excellent condition for its age, with a very good, solid fill level that signifies meticulous preservation over the decades. The integrity of the labels and the pristine state of the capsule make it an outstanding artifact of cognac history.
